Tempur Pedic mattress toppers are the new alternative to the traditional pillow top mattresses.
As more and more consumers try these mattress toppers there are many more reviews being published on the benefits and drawbacks of these toppers. Here's what we discerned from our research of the Tempurpedic mattress topper reviews.
What consumers are saying:
Some customers say their Tempurpedic memory foam toppers relieve their back pain, others say they notice no difference at all.
Some users say their memory foam mattress topper slips off their bed, whereas others have no problem with this.
Some people notice the chemical odor from their Tempurpedic topper disappears within 12 hrs, but others say that the chemical odor lingers for days, weeks or even months.
Please note that we do not recommend using any kind of memory foam if you have chronic illness, allergies or chemical sensitivity … and they should never be used for babies whose immune systems are not developed.
Finally, some consumers say their Tempurpedic topper costs too much money, whereas others say that it is cost effective. This seems to be a matter of personal budget and whether a person feels the benefit of the mattress is worth the hefty price tag.
One thing that most consumers found to be a huge plus about these mattress toppers was the ability of the memory foam to conform so well to the body. One consumer described it as feeling like he was sleeping on a marshmallow.
The cost of the Tempur Pedic mattress topper was also a plus when compared to purchasing a brand new pillow top mattress. The cost was still considered substantial, but was nonetheless a much cheaper alternative than getting a whole new mattress.
Cleaning was another plus for some people who purchased this brand of topper. Traditional mattresses aren't easy to clean, if at all, and when you do attempt to have one cleaned it can be costly. Some consumers report the tempurpedic mattress toppers were easy to clean.
One person reported that while her husband and she loved the topper, there was an issue with her husband's side of the bed. He sweats excessively and his side of the bed was absorbing the sweat throughout the night. Keeping it clean and odor free has been time consuming, and she noted that their regular mattress didn't seem to absorb nearly as much sweat.
Another Tempur Pedic mattress topper owner reported that their topper started to fall apart with time. This could definitely be an issue. The weight of the topper was also considered to be quite heavy by some people.
The mixed reviews were perhaps the most interesting. Some consumers said their toppers tended to slip off of their mattresses while others claimed their toppers stayed in place. Could this be due to improper placement?
The jury is still out on a whether a Tempur Pedic mattress topper can relieve back pain. The reviews were quite mixed on this point. Please see our page on the best mattress for back pain for more on this.
The length of time it takes for the chemical smell of the toppers to dissipate is apparently up for debate also. Some reported the smell was gone within the first twelve hours, while others reported that it lingered for more than twelve hours. Some people said the chemical odor never went away and they developed health problems after using a memory foam mattress.
Cost was also a point of debate. Those that thought the price was worth the investment were also the ones that said it would have been much more expensive to purchase a pillow top mattress. Other people reported the cost was too high, but didn't elaborate as to why they felt this way.
Many traditional mattress manufacturers make claims that their mattresses are proven to relieve many body aches and pains although these claims have never been substantiated by doctors. Other health issues related to these mattress toppers have been discovered and should be investigated further prior to purchasing a mattress or topper made from memory foam.
People with allergies and sensitive skin have had their conditions worsen due to sleeping on memory foam, which is often due to the outgassing of chemicals used on the memory foam. See our article on Memory foam Mattress concerns for more information.
Dust mites are one of the suspected reasons for why some people experience allergic reactions to mattresses. Mattresses manufactured from memory foam naturally resist the infestation of dust mites, which could reduce some instances of allergic reactions to a sleeping surface.
Dust mites can't survive in wool materials because of the substance called lanolin that is naturally found in wool. Dust mites that can't live on your mattress can't irritate or exacerbate sensitive skin or allergy conditions.
Traditional inner spring mattresses can play host to dust mites and therefore are not recommended for individuals who suffer from allergies or who have sensitive skin.
Some people with dust mite allergies report doing better with memory foam than with a traditional inner spring mattress, however we don't recommend it because of the chemicals involved.
Other alternative choices include organic cotton and organic latex mattresses, since latex is naturally resistant to dust mites but please consult with your physician to be sure these are a good choice for you.
The choices in mattress toppers can be overwhelming. When shopping around for a new one, be sure to investigate all of your options at the same time you're researching the Tempur Pedic mattress topper. This way you can make a healthy and educated decision!
